Frequently Asked Questions About Teeth Whitening

Q: What is tray tooth whitening?
A: At your first appointment we’ll make a custom teeth tray, made of soft plastic, into which a gentle peroxide gel can be placed for each whitening session. You will usually wear the trays for between one and two hours at a time.

Q: How long does tray based whitening take?
A: The best results are obtained in about 10 days.

Q: How long do the results last?
A: By following some simple post whitening care instructions, your teeth will always be lighter than they were before. To keep your teeth looking their best, we recommend flossing and brushing twice daily.

Q: What causes tooth discolouration?
A: Teeth can lose their natural whiteness for many reasons, including genetic predisposition (ie. it runs in the family), foodstuffs, natural ageing, and accidental damage. Drinks like tea, coffee and wine can discolour your teeth and should be avoided if you wish to maintain your teeth at their whitest.

Q: Do many people whiten their teeth?
A: More people than you might imagine. A bright sparkling smile can make a big difference for everyone.

Q: Who may benefit from tooth whitening?
A: Almost anyone. However, treatment may not be as effective for some as it is for others. Your dental professional can determine if you are a viable candidate for this procedure through a thorough oral exam, including a shade assessment. Please note that if you have crowns or veneers at the front of your mouth, these will not lighten with any tooth whitening procedure and therefore they will need replacing after treatment.

Q: Is whitening safe?
A: Yes. Extensive research and clinical studies indicate that whitening teeth under the supervision of a dentist is safe. In fact, many dentists consider whitening the safest cosmetic dental procedure available. Whitening is not legal for patients under 18 years of age.
